The research security conditions that apply to you will differ depending on the nature of the research itself, any partners involved in the research, and which federal grant(s) will fund your research.
Current federal policies and guidelines apply to research of the following nature:
Research involving
private-sector partners
If you are applying to a grant with a private-sector partner (i.e. company), industry association or producer group, your project will likely be required to adhere to the National Security Guidelines on Research Partnerships (NSGRP).
NSGRP: Applicable Funding Opportunities
CIHR
The NSGRP apply to the Project Grant program starting with the Fall 2024 competition.
NSERC
The NSGRP apply to Alliance grants, including special calls and joint funding opportunities where identified in the funding opportunity literature.
SSHRC
As of April 2024, NSGRP do not apply to any SSHRC competitions. Please check individual competition information to confirm.
CFI
The NSGRP apples to every CFI funding program except the College Fund. CFI will implement these requirements according their “Timeline for implementation”. Only certain partners that meet specified criteria will be subject to NSGRP requirements.
CFI partner criteria
The NSGRP applies only to private-sector partners that:
Have an active role in the research activities described in the proposal (e.g., sharing of intellectual property, providing expertise, actively participating in research activities, contributing financially to the research activities); or
House part or all of the research infrastructure; or
Contribute more than $500,000 to the infrastructure through a cash or in-kind contribution to any single item.
Research involving
advanced and emerging technologies
If you are applying to a grant where you are aiming to advance specified sensitive technology research areas(1), your project and the researchers who are part of your team (if applicable) will be subject to the Policy on Sensitive Technology Research and Affiliations of Concern (STRAC Policy).
STRAC Policy: Applicable Funding Opportunities
CIHR
For opportunities that launch on or after May 1, 2024:
The STRAC policy will apply to all CIHR grant programs (Project, Team, Operating grants), excluding those focused solely on knowledge mobilization or individual awards.
The STRAC Policy will not apply to the Institute Community Support program, Café Scientifique, travel grants, Planning & Dissemination grants, Capacity Building Workshops, Knowledge Synthesis grants, or Prizes.
Please consult CIHR’s ResearchNet and application portal for information about specific funding opportunities.

New Frontiers in Research Fund (NFRF)
Exploration
Transformation
International
Special Calls
Canada Research Chairs
Canada Excellence Research Chairs
Canada First Research Excellence Fund
CFI
The STRAC policy applies to every CFI funding program except the College Fund, the 2023 Innovation Fund Competition, and the Biosciences Research Infrastructure Fund – Partnership with Stage 2 of the Canada Biomedical Research Fund.
Use our Federal Policy Self-Check as a starting place to determine whether and which policies/guidelines apply to your research funds.
If either the NSGRP or STRAC Policy or, in some cases, both applies to your research, additional documentation will be required as part of your grant application.
